First Grade - Journal Entry - Day Three

Coming into the room today, I was alone. The teacher, along with the other first grade teacher and the principle were in an impromptu conference in the other first grade room. They were discussing some children that have displayed behavior issues, what progress they have made, the parent interactions, and other ideas of what they can do to assist the child with their behavior.

The principle was then called away, and the two first grade teachers came into the room I am working in. The teacher that I am working with, looks for and hands the other teacher a book, and explains the lesson plan that she could do with the kids.

After all of this being done within the five minutes the teacher had left before the children arrived, she then makes her way over to me to see if I have any questions. I was impressed with her ability to be mentored, mentor and collaborate all within a short amount of time. She was then off to welcome the children into the room as she does every morning.

Today I noticed that the teacher is really good about giving the children clues. I know this is something that a lot of people do, but she does it in a very fun and familiar way. Too often I see people give a little bit of info at a time, and the children seem to struggle even hard. This teacher is good at given a reasonable and good clue that will actually assist the child.

I also noticed that while there are many times I see her trying new things; she also sticks with the learning skills that work, and excite the kids. I think this is good, and gives the children a sort of foundation and comfort zone within their learning.

I was happy to get to interact more with the children today, and was able to talk with the teacher about the lessons that I will be doing. It is all very exciting to be getting to do what I am working towards, and really appreciate the teacher trusting me with her kids.
