First Grade - Journal Entry - The Lessons

Today I completed the second of my two lessons that I was required to do for my field experience. And I have to tell you...I LOVE TEACHING!!!!

I think that a lot of it has to do with what I am teaching. Both lessons were based on Phonics and Fluency with the second lesson also touching on Comprehension. Literacy is a passion of mine, and it is so great to see kids getting it.

When you think about it there is so much that goes into knowing how to read. You have to know each letter, then know the sound it makes. Then know if it makes more than one sound, and know which one it is, if that is the case. Then you have to know sounds two letters make together, and so on and so one. It is a miracle any of us master this.

I digress back to the experience of teaching the lessons. The first one seemed a bit more flawless. The teacher assisted me in some of the planning, and gave me the curriculum that she uses. This was a great way for me to get used to the kids and them to get used to me.

The second lesson, I found a great poem to base the lesson on. The worst part, was that as I started the lesson, i found a major error on my planning. Thankfully the children were gracious and I had the lead teacher there to help me recreate some worksheets on the fly.

It was a great experience however, as it showed me that I have a greater capacity for flexibility than I thought. I was forced to think on my toes, with an intensely captive audience of 24 kids, and I could do it. I kept my cool. That, was a great feeling.
